Lasik Aftermath: After the Eyelids have Settled
Two concerns exist for the Lasik surgery candidate: Researching and selecting the best possible doctor for the operation and following up with the proper post-surgery treatment and eye-care. Most Lasik eye-corrective surgeries go well; over 90 percent of all patients are more than content with the result of improved vision and bear no permanent side-effects. Some of the success is due to the careful treatment that is carried out at home after the Lasik has been performed.
The first thing to take into consideration is the exact advice and directions given by your Lasik physician. He should offer a sound understanding of the whole Lasik process from beginning (the interview at the Lasik center with him and the staff) through to the end of the procedure. Someone should guide you through the post-surgery steps to ensure optimal eye health, carefully and thoroughly.
Side-effects should be on the mind of patients. Questions like: What is to be expected after surgery? How long certain symptoms will last? And which of those symptoms should be cause for concern and addressed? are all necessary to ensure proper healing and should be dealt with by the doctor or a member of staff. Some common occurrences including fluctuating vision and halos around lights are to be expected and are not a cause for concern. If you find that there are any unclear postoperative symptoms, consult your physician to make sure that all goes well.
Every Lasik expert has his or her own preferred Lasik methods for dealing with patients, though there is a common ground between most Lasik clinics. The first thing to do after the Lasik procedure is to get plenty of sleep. This greatly aids the healing process. Also, for at least five days after the operation, avoid any contact with the eyes, including bumping and rubbing of the eyes. For those who are prone to unconsciously rubbing their eyes during sleep, most centers have a kind of eye guard that is worn during the night to prevent such undesirable action.
Eyestrain should also be avoided for a few days after the Lasik operation. It is understandably tempting to read all the words, signs and objects that where hitherto illegible, but try to avoid doing this outside of what is moderation. Over sensitivity to light or glare should be solved by wearing dark sunglasses for some days until the problem goes away. Temporary halos around lights are to be expected as this is common, but not serious enough to be concerned with.
Eye-lubricants should be applied to the eye soon after the Lasik operation. All Lasik experts will prescribe these eye drops that are a necessary precaution before bed-time. Lasik operations have the somewhat adverse effect of drying up the eye which causes the eyelid to slightly stick to the eye during sleep. When the Lasik patient gets up in the morning, their eyelids are stuck and opening them is the same as rubbing the eye. Since this is best avoided, there are certain eye drops that should be given in this case to solve the problem.
These simple steps will ensure that, after the operation is over, the patient is on the road to a healthy, pain-free recovery.
