Is There an Eye Doctor in the House?
One of the best things you could treat yourself to, is improving your vision with a Lasik surgery operation. Growing up, we receive enough lectures about cherishing what we have been given in life to know being careful counts, our parents’ advice, “Your eyes are precious”, is a classic. Not to be taken lightly though, It is crucial when having the surgery, that the doctor you choose to carry out the Lasik procedure, be one you trust and confide in.
In starting, there are three reasons that should not influence your choice of a doctor for the procedure. The convenience of a Lasik centre’s location is not of great importance; instead, look for the most professional office as a great practitioner would only require a few visits to take care of the procedure. Cost and Lasik technology type are also not particularly important as they vary widely based on the operation and the surgical skills required. So ideally, cost depends on the kind of Lasik surgery you are getting, in other words, you get what you paid for, hopefully your money’s worth. Anyway, Lasik doctors in large areas usually offer you a choice between a few variant styles of Lasik.
So what does matter when choosing a doctor? One of several things is the ability to determine, from the information you provide, whether or not Lasik is right for you in the first place; age, medical history and recent eye injuries affect the probability of being a candidate for the surgery in the first place. A good sign of a professional is seeing someone who is willing to take the time to sit down with you and inquire about your medical situation.
Do some research; find out who has good standing as a physician with those you know and a general track record. Advertisements alone are not enough to mark a good practice; more is needed to win you over. Large campaigns to advertise, discounting actual prices and other red flags should set a flare in your mind telling you that something might be off, a good practice would be to disregard such Lasik centers.
Another good sign, is when the doctor is involved with the entire Lasik operation from start, to end. As stated earlier, he should be ready to take the time and analyze your specific case and advise you on the options. Overlooking the operation itself is not enough, the doctor needs to be involved with the pre-examination, the operation and the medical revision to examine the success of the procedure. Some centers have had the ill-repute of not following up with the clients after the surgery until serious physical complaints with expressed.
Find out if the physician is being honest about the actual procedure and especially honest about their own track record. One way of doing this is by asking him to state an example of a time he turned down a patient for the procedure and why that patient wasn’t a right candidate for the Lasik treatment. Also, ask how many total procedures he has performed and how many in the past couple of years. An experienced physician is one who has performed 1000 plus procedures, at least 500 of which were done in the last couple of years.
These questions are only a point to set you going, an investigation into the neighboring Lasik centers and the well-reputed centers further away from you. This is time well spent and after all, a clearer future awaits you.
