I am Pro-Lasik
I am happy now, that I had Lasik vision correction surgery a couple of years ago. I hope my story with encourage those who are thinking about getting the procedure done and also those who may think that they are not the right candidates for the operation or are worried about the possible adverse effects related to Lasik. I do suffer from a serious side effect as an outcome of the procedure. After weighing the before against the after, I can confidently say I made the right choice and hope others will make it too.
During my operation, everything went well, all according to plan; I felt little discomfort and no pain at all. At each phase of the operation, my physician was clear in stating where we have reached just so I’d know that all is going well. It went faster than I had pictured it to be. They informed me beforehand that the operation wouldn’t be twenty minutes but it still surprised me how fast it all happened.
After the operation had ended, my doctor returned the flap he had made in my eye back to its natural place, placed a sort of clear goop on it and I could straightaway notice a significant improvement in my vision. I was given goggles to wear at night for five nights so that I wouldn’t rub my eyes in my sleep. Needless to say, they presume no Lasik eye surgery patient would think about doing it while awake.
I also thoroughly carried out all the instructions they gave me about how to take care of my eye after the operation. I went home and got some sleep straight afterwards, consistently used the eye drops I was given and did not try to test my eyes limit or cause strain by reading. I was completely surprised to see how the Lasik procedure positively transformed my vision immediately, as though I was wearing contact lenses that could not be sensed, truly remarkable.
The biggest hindrance to my recovery from the Lasik operation was due to epithelial erosion. The flap the doctor makes in the eye is comprised of epithelial cells. The cells should start regenerating one the flap has been return to its previous position to fill in the gap where the line was made. This is what should happen during the healing process but in my case the cells that grew in, would be pulled back out when I opened my eyes in the morning. My eyelids were insufficiently moisturized and so the cells would not stay in place.
When I came to my Lasik physician with this problem, I was told that this is a normal side effect and that it just meant that healing would take longer. I went for a checkup, which I urge anyone who has had Lasik surgery to do in case of any troubles or inquiries, and they issued me with a thicker type of jelly-like eye drops to use during sleep. It worked and the rest of the recovery was a breeze.
I am now a strong believer in the Lasik treatment. I recommend that you see several physicians before making a decision and not put too much importance on price. After all, you only have the two eyes and having them in the care of a skilled physician is what counts.
