I am Lasiked, and Proud of it!

You can find me on those online forums that are concerned with the Lasik vision correction surgery. I am considered one of the old-timer there; it’s been over three years since my Lasik procedure. It was when I realised that most of the postings on the forums where by people whose Lasik procedure fell short of their expectations, that I decided to give my two bits’ worth. Here is my experience for better, not worse.

Let me start in reverse chronological order; I will start off by telling you about my current “vision” situation, and then go back to the days when I couldn’t get by without a guide-dog. (I exaggerate of course, it’s not like I was blind, my vision was not that severely impaired, but was definitely another life before Lasik). It has been three years since my Lasik, and I now have over 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. For those of you who aren’t that informed about the Lasik process, there is no guarantee of 100% perfect vision for anyone who has it done.

One permanent side effect was halos around bright lights but it is a small price to pay for having astoundingly better vision. This is the only permanent side effect I now experience and it is not really troublesome. To some point, it is quite a pretty effect and anyway, it mainly happens at night, in the dark with bright lights. They look like the fake twinkle that TV shows often portray in the characters’ eyes. The fact is, I am joyful to be one of the people who have had a successful Lasik vision corrective surgery, a group which constitutes over 90 percent of all Lasik patients.

A temporary side effect of my Lasik operation was blurred vision that I experience while attempting to focus on those things that were close to my face (very close, something like six inches away). I later asked my husband if I had complained about any postoperative problems such as fluctuating vision or over-sensitivity to light. Neither of us could recall me having any significant problems after my Lasik experience, I did sleep more than enough though, and I did take the prescribed eye drops religiously.

Sleep supposedly aids in the healing process and my Lasik doctor strongly urged me to get plenty of rest right after my procedure to jump start the healing process. I might have gone too far with that advice because I spent an awful lot of time sleeping, but I wanted to give my eyes as much rest as possible after the surgery. One other thing I remember is getting blurry vision at the end of a busy day. This side effect kept going on for quite a few months after my Lasik vision corrective surgery which is why I thought I needed to rest my eyes as much as possible in the first place.

To my family, I was like one of those people they had up in those posters displaying a certain medical condition, like a charity case, in this case Lasik eye surgery. After my successful surgery, many of those family members decided to get their own Lasik treatment and got the courage to set up an appointment for their own Lasik; I will also share their stories with others. One more thing, be on the lookout for the best Lasik practitioner in your area, your eyes will thank you later.
