How dramatically Lasik Helps
More and more people I talk with are thinking about, or have already scheduled, a Lasik vision correction operation. I have no idea why all of a sudden, there is a noticeable sudden popularity of Lasik around me and in my company. I do know from my long experience that there are certain rumors about Lasik that are floating around that just aren’t true.
It has been over eight years since I had my operation, so I was one of the first and intrepid pioneers! Well I had worse than -9 in each eye so maybe it wasn’t bravery as much as it was desperation. Even after all this time and the advances, Lasik physicians will make it clear from the start that a patient with high vision impairment like that will not likely be fully resolved and there will still remain a dependency on corrective eyewear.
I felt some slight pressure and usual feelings during the Lasik procedure itself, but no serious discomfort and no pain at all. This still rings true today, though hopefully, they have become better at keeping the patient comfortable during the operation. The difference today is that the patient is given a mild sedative. If only for psychological reasons, I wouldn’t have minded taking one back then.
About a couple of days after my procedure, I was astonished to find that I had amazingly clear vision in both eyes, at least 20/20. Taking into account my vision prescription when I walked in, it is no surprise that I was so grateful for my Lasik physician. Although I did experience the common temporary side effects of dryness in the eyes (which I took I eye drops for) and halos around light sources at night.
I did notice my vision change a few months later; it was a slight change though. To put it as best as I can, the crisp edges in my sight were no longer crisp, but everything was still very much in focus. After a year had past since my procedure, I followed up with a visit to the doctor who had performed my operation and he told me that I still retained 20/20 in one eye, but the other was tending towards 20/40. This is still a great move forward considering where I was and my doctor and I are still very happy with the way things turned out.
My vision since then has not deteriorated and I still have the 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. I have a sole contact lens and a pair of glasses for that eye, but a hardly ever use them unless I am watching a movie or something. The long-term success of my procedure has encouraged many people in the office I work in to pursue the Lasik notion. Since I was 35 at the time of my operation, my doctor told me that this was a good sign because my eyes were stable at my age and so the Lasik results were for the long-term.
I hope that my story has inspired those with bad vision to sit down and discuss the Lasik procedure with a physician that has good standing in the Lasik field. One that you trust and will hopefully provide you with results that are as great as mine.
