Brave Enough to Lasik

I wrote this story with the aim of regaining people’s trust in the Lasik vision correction procedure. I put it on the web for all those that were considering Lasik but have read so many exaggerated accounts that they are now hesitant. After being on the internet for a while, I personally needed to conjure the courage to go down to the local Lasik clinic and ask them about my specific case. I am happy that I did; the staff was very generous, professional and gave me confidence.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have had to wear glasses and that is the reason I considered Lasik in the first place. My eyesight was so severely impaired that I would only take my glasses off at night when I went to bed. I kept them in a specific location so I could easily access them and always carried backups just in case something happened to the pair I had on. Dry-eyes is a problematic factor for anyone who is thinking about being a candidate for the procedure and it is a problem that I had had for several years.

My Lasik physician did not beat around the bush with me. He made it clear from the beginning that one of my eyes might not improve as much as the other, but both of them would improve dramatically. He reassured me that he had at about one patient come in each month with the poor vision that I had in my bad eye and get Lasik treatment.

Whatever eye problems you may have, and there are many, I recommend that you pay your local Lasik center a visit and have a talk with the physician and staff there to discuss your specific case. Like I said, I had the dry-eyes problem, but I had easily dilating pupils as well. Both are problematic when it comes to getting Lasik surgery. These in my case, did not convince my doctor against the surgery as they weren’t severe enough. This is why it is important to discuss your specific eye health with your doctor.

I however, was not convinced at first about getting the procedure. For several weeks I flip-flopped between having it and not having it. I felt the information I was given wasn’t enough to get me there. I didn’t lose any sleep or anything and when push came to shove… I found myself at the clinic awaiting my Lasik treatment.
I was given a mild sedative and eye numbing drops and the rest of the Lasik procedure was clear sailing. The only thing that hurt during the surgery was my hands since I must have had them clenched the entire time; the only other sensation was a pressure on my eye ball which was painless. I was so thankful to my physician who saw me through the operation with remarks such as “I’m using the laser for 20 seconds… 5 more seconds… this eye is done!”. This kept me feeling safe and relaxed knowing that everything is going according to plan.

I did everything I was supposed to after the operation to ensure a quick healing process. I am very pleased with the results. Instantly afterwards, I could see far better and my vision kept improving till much after. I did not experience any of the very common temporary side effects such as halos around bright lights or sensitivity to light. Be brave enough and you won’t regret it, I urge you to go down to the Lasik clinic and at least discuss your case with the experts.
